Monday Night YA Book Review

Cinder

by Marissa Meyer

This new twist on an old tale is inventive and engrossing. Cinder is a cyborg mechanic. She has a robotic arm, leg, and a netscreen built into her brain. In classic Cinderella fashion, she has a stepmother and two stepsisters, there is a handsome prince, and a ball. But, the story is not actually centralized on the typical light romance.

New Beijing and the Earth are struggling with the ever-increasing letumosis outbreaks, a deadly plague. The Lunar Queen is threatening war against the Earth. And young Prince Kai must make decisions that no teenager should have to make for the good of his country. And Cinder? Cinder just wants to be free.

Meyer seems to have a clear plan for the Lunar Chronicles, and it shows through with her well developed characters and unique world. If you like Science Fiction, with a little bit of teen romance, you might like Cinder. And if you like Cinder, pick up the rest of the Lunar Chronicles: Scarlet, Cress, and Winter (coming Winter 2015).

4 YA Titles to Read Before They Hit the Big Screen

It seems the new trend in movies these days is taking popular teen books and turning them into movies. Whether or not the movie does the book justice remains to be seen. But, you can't critically compare the movie and the book unless you read the book! So here are 4 books to read before they come out in theaters!

1. Paper Towns by John Green

If you enjoy realistic fiction, you might want to read Paper Towns by John Green (if you haven't already!). Witty, poignant, and entertaining this book will make you laugh and cry. Check it out today!

Slated for release July 24, 2015 (IMDB)

2. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

This classic tale is the short, grim story of Victor Frankenstein and the monster he creates. Filled with horror, sorrow, and mayhem, this is a good book to read on a stormy night!

The movie seems very loosely based on the book, told from the perspective of Igor (Daniel Radcliffe), Victor Frankenstein's assistant (IMDB). Funny enough, this character is not present in the book and is entirely fictionalized. Read the book and enjoy commenting during the movie how many liberties the movie has taken!!

Slated for release October 2, 2015 (IMDB)

3. Insurgent by Veronica Roth

The second book in the Divergent trilogy, Insurgent is another fast paced dystopian thriller. If you haven't read it yet, give it a try! The movie is out now, so time is a-wasting! Come to the library and check out your copy today.

Released March 20, 2015 (IMDB)

4. Mockingjay- Part 2

The final and fourth movie in Suzanne Collins' dystopian trilogy, Mockingjay- Part 2 will most likely be released in November 2015 (IMDB). If you haven't already, read the books before the final movie is released. The books will give you a deeper knowledge of the world of Panem and Katniss Everdeen. If you like dystopian novels or quick reads, this series might be for you!
