Monday Night YA Book Review

Cinder

by Marissa Meyer

This new twist on an old tale is inventive and engrossing. Cinder is a cyborg mechanic. She has a robotic arm, leg, and a netscreen built into her brain. In classic Cinderella fashion, she has a stepmother and two stepsisters, there is a handsome prince, and a ball. But, the story is not actually centralized on the typical light romance.

New Beijing and the Earth are struggling with the ever-increasing letumosis outbreaks, a deadly plague. The Lunar Queen is threatening war against the Earth. And young Prince Kai must make decisions that no teenager should have to make for the good of his country. And Cinder? Cinder just wants to be free.

Meyer seems to have a clear plan for the Lunar Chronicles, and it shows through with her well developed characters and unique world. If you like Science Fiction, with a little bit of teen romance, you might like Cinder. And if you like Cinder, pick up the rest of the Lunar Chronicles: Scarlet, Cress, and Winter (coming Winter 2015).
